1996 World Cup
The 1996 World Cup was known for two things - due to the
collapse of all the Sachin Tendulkar's World Cup batting record, Psl schedule and teams 2018 the other
Sanath Jayasuriya's ability to bat in the ODIs would be changed to a new
beginning.
Sachin Tendulkar scored the highest score, which included
523 runs in 7 innings, an average of 87 and five 50+ scores. Although India had
lost in the semifinals, one of the batsmen could not even come near Sachin's
figures.
On the other hand, Jayasuriya, who started a new trend of
bringing the balls of the bowlers across the borders across the fielding
restrictions, bringing revolutionary changes in the batting of one-day cricket.
He finished the tournament with an average of 221 runs in 37 innings in six
innings and in the meantime his strike rate was 131.5, which was unbelievable
according to that period. Along with the ball, he had an economy of 4.5 and
seven wickets at an average of 33.
In the end Jayasuriya was declared as the player of the
tournament, and there was also an important role played by him in the success
of his team in the tournament.
But there was also a player who had played a big part in
winning the team for the team compared to Sri Lankan Jayasuriya in the entire
tournament, and that was Arvind De Silva. With the match-winning century in the
final, with the help of four half-centuries in the World Cup, right-handed
batsman scored an average of 90 and 448 runs from 108 strike-rate. He also took
four wickets in the tournament.
Considering all these figures, it was more appropriate for D
Silva to be selected for the prize in place of his fellow player Jayasuriya.
